Producing Music Videos: Crafting Emotion in Lewis Capaldi’s “Rush”

Simone Bett, BrightWolf’s Head of Production is no stranger to producing music videos and in this case it was for none other than the great Lewis Capaldi, here’s what she had to say about the job:

I love my job and I know I’m very lucky to work on such interesting and diverse projects. I don’t have one favorite; no two jobs are the same, so comparison is hard, but one that really stands out for me was producing a music video for one of Scotland’s greats—Lewis Capaldi.

Following his successful ‘Bloom’ EP, Lewis returned with a heartfelt new single called “Rush.” This track, a collaboration with the talented Jessie Reyez and Grammy Award-winning producer Malay, highlights why Lewis has captivated so many fans globally. Producing a music video like this one offers a unique glimpse into the raw emotions that artists want to convey through their music.

Lewis himself described “Rush” as an exploration. He said, “’Rush’ is about the unadulterated rawness of break-ups. Although you feel hurt to see somebody you love go, love isn’t a switch you can simply turn on and off as you please. You don’t want to see them hurt, but then that rawness kicks in where you ask yourself the question; What if they don’t feel as sad as I do, right now? Does it lessen what we had?”

Our location scout found a pizza place with an American diner like interior in the Southside of Glasgow.. This became our set, where the powerful emotions of the song were brought to life. The process of producing a music video involves capturing these moments of vulnerability and intensity in a way that complements the song’s narrative. We filmed the entire track in a single continuous shot using a Steadicam, with dynamic lighting changes from an overhead rig to intensify the emotional impact.

Producing music videos like this not only showcases the raw talent of artists like Capaldi and Reyez but also brings out the best in our production team. Each project brings its own set of challenges and delights, but working on ‘Rush’ with such a talented crew and artist duo was truly a standout experience in the world of film music videos.
