Hello.I’m Magnus Wake and I’m here to take you through the BrightWolf Big Five. It’s raining at the moment, which is the perfect time for a piece of camera.
The BrightWolf Big Five is where we go around Scotland and highlight some of the most amazing places you can film. Today, we’re doing ‘Historic Edinburgh’.
Moray Place, Edinburgh New Town
The first destination is the elegant Moray Plac ein Edinburgh’s New Town. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was shot here, as was Belgravia. Much like Bath in the South, it’s got this lovely neo-classical Georgian architecture. Incredibly elegant. Moray Place transports you to a bygone era, making it the perfect setting for period dramas and historic tales.
Bakehouse Close
Bakehouse Close, nestled off the Royal Mile- this location offers a rich atmosphere steeped in history. A wonderful, quirky little courtyard of bustling little buildings. These places look like they’re 400 or 500 years old…and that’s because they are! And so this is the stonework that actually was around in the era that a lot in the era that a lot of people want to film, when we had the battling clans of Scotland and Mary Queen of Scots. So if you can see a scene set in that period, this is just the perfect location. Heart of the city, lots of facilities and you get a timeless feel.
Craigmillar Castle
Now we arrive at the glorious Craigmillar Castle.We’ve made a point of not showing Edinburgh Castle because it’s such a big, burly bruiser of a castle that it really doesn’t fit with any of those kind of iconic, more highland scenes that most crews are wanting to film. So here we’ve got Craigmillar Castle, right on the edge of Edinburgh, and yet it looks like it could be in the Highlands. You can really shoot some beautiful scenes. The stonework is timeless. It has a lovely feeling inside as well, which could be set dressed to give you a piece of clan history. Used for Outlaw King and Outlander. An amazing backdrop for productions wanting to mix a bit of history with the highlands of Scotland. Craigmillar- good facilities, good spaces, lots of different ways you can use it.
Dean Village
Dean Village is situated in the city centre, just below the New Town.You’ve got the Water of Leith, a lovely river that runs through the heart of Edinburgh. So this is a very different feeling for the city. It’s actually based around where they used to have old mill buildings. It’s got flowing water, it’s got big trees, it’s got greenery. But you’ve also got cobbled streets and you’ve got that old stonework. Again, perfect for filming period dramas.
Croft-An-Righ
Our final destination is Croft-An-Righ lane. With its medieval architectureand winding cobblestone path. This enchanting location is ideal for productions that demand a touch of fantasy, mystery or historical intrigue. Situated in the heart of the city next to the Royal Mile and at the base of Arthur’s Seat, which is a stunning location in its own right.
